Eris Disk Usage Policy
NB - This policy will be loosely enforced at first. That means the quotas are not hard, and you will not immediately need to buy storage space if you go over 10gb. Until there is a need to enforce the policy using real quotas, excessive disk usage will be dealt with on a case by case basis.Due to the large amount of disk space that will be available on Eris 2.0, it makes sense to impose quotas on disk usage. A quota referrs to the maximum amount of space you are allowed to use on Eris. Once you have reached the limit, you will not be able to use any more disk space. The maximum that any user will be allowed to use without charge is 10 GB (gigabytes).
The goal here is not to restrict usage, but to prevent one user to have a significant impact on others, and to prevent excessive usage of both disk and bandwidth. The disk usage policy also exists so that users who do wish to use larger amounts of disk can do so - supporting the provisioning of necessary infrastructure. I believe this policy is both fair and equitable.
Default Disk Allocation
Your disk usage on Eris refers to your home directory (including email) and your web space. The default allocation in the new system is as follows:Home directory: 4 GB
Website space: 2 GB per domain
Maximum allowed space without charge: 10GB
So, by default, every Eris account includes 4GB for email and files, and 2GB per domain, up to three domains. Your disk space can be allocated in any way you choose, up to the 10gb maximum. To request a change in quota, send an email.
Purchasing More Space
Users who wish to allocate space beyond the 10GB maximum total will be charged $0.50 per gigabyte per month. This charge is intended to provide both for the purchasing of extra disk space and the provisioning of larger backup systems.Common amounts are illustrated below.
| Extra Space | Cost at renewal time |
|---|---|
| 10 GB (20GB total) | $30 ($5/mo) |
| 20 GB (30GB total) | $60 ($10/mo) |
| 50 GB (60GB total) | $150 ($25/mo) |
| 100 GB (110GB total) | $300 ($50/mo) |
